Ordering a ring online means guessing at a measurement you've probably never taken. Here are three ways to get it right at home, in under five minutes.
Method 1: the string or paper strip
- Cut a strip of paper about 4 inches long and a quarter inch wide, or use a piece of non-stretchy string.
- Wrap it around the base of the finger you'll wear the ring on. Snug, but not tight enough to dent your skin.
- Mark where the end overlaps, then lay the strip flat against a ruler and measure in millimetres.
- That measurement is your finger circumference. Compare it to a standard chart: roughly 49mm is a US size 5, 52mm is a size 6, 54mm is a size 7, 57mm is a size 8.
Method 2: measure a ring you already own
Take a ring that fits the right finger comfortably and measure the inside diameter across the widest point, in millimetres. Around 15.7mm is a US size 5, 16.5mm a size 6, 17.3mm a size 7, and 18.2mm a size 8. This method is more accurate than string, because there's no tension to get wrong.
Method 3: a printed sizing chart
Plenty of free printable charts let you lay an existing ring over a set of circles and read off the size. One caution: print at 100% scale with no "fit to page" setting, or every circle will be wrong. Verify by checking the printed ruler on the sheet against a real ruler before you trust it.
The mistakes that cause returns
- Measuring cold hands. Fingers shrink in cold and swell in heat. Measure at room temperature, mid-afternoon, when your hands are at their most typical.
- Forgetting the knuckle. If your knuckle is noticeably wider than the base of your finger, size to slide over the knuckle, then expect a little movement at the base.
- Assuming both hands match. Your dominant hand is usually a quarter to half a size larger.
- Ignoring band width. Wide bands fit tighter than thin ones. For a band over 6mm, go up a quarter to half a size.
When sizing doesn't matter
Adjustable rings sidestep all of this. Both the Fidget Beads Ring and the I Am Enough Ring are adjustable, which is also why they work as gifts — you don't need to know the recipient's size at all. You'll find both in our gifts under $30 collection.
